Highlights From the Inaugural Fellowship

Highlights From the Inaugural Fellowship

With the conclusion of our first LAVAN Impact Investor Fellowship, we look back on the incredible journey undertaken by our Fellows. LAVAN could not be prouder of the passion our Fellows have shown for exploring the impact investing space and their enthusiasm for bringing what they have learned into their personal financial decisions and those of their Jewish communities.

We began this journey by reflecting on the Jewish teaching that instructs us to “Know from where you came, and to where you are going, and for whom are you responsible.” Together, we explored the values that guide our lives, how these can help inform our financial decisions, and what this means for personal and communal responsibility.

Over the course of eight sessions, the Fellows gained an expansive understanding of the impact investing landscape, familiarity with the steps of the investment process, and exposure to the wide variety of impact investing players and tools. We are grateful to all our guest speakers and presenters for taking the time to share their insights and perspectives with our Fellows:

Throughout the Spring, our Fellows applied what they learned in the first phase of the Fellowship and took the first steps toward aligning their capital with their values. Driven by our earlier work defining the values that guide our decisions, the Fellows formed smaller working groups around issue areas they are passionate about.

Working groups include:

  • Jewish sustainability and affordability

  • Global and domestic poverty alleviation

  • Clean energy

  • Impact investing in the public markets

  • Healthcare

The working groups gained hands-on investing experience exploring the landscape of impact investing opportunities within their issue area, identifying a small set of preliminary investment opportunities, and conducting initial due diligence on the opportunities they are considering pursuing.

The entire Fellowship cohort convened to present on the investment opportunities each working group is most excited about. The energized discussions on opportunities ranging from a new business model for delivering emergency medical services to alternatives in private Jewish early childhood education were testament to our Fellows individual and collective drive to change the way we think about how we direct our assets toward social good.

In the months following the end of the formal Fellowship program, the Fellows have kept the energy going, putting actions to words in pursuing the impact investment opportunities aligned to their values. We cannot wait to see what this inaugural cohort does with the tools they acquired and network they built.

"Participating in the LAVAN Fellowship availed to me an incredible network of curious, inspiring, ambitious, and diverse Jews working in various fields of business who were seeking to make a broader and intentional impact in the world. LAVAN opened my eyes to new possibilities; I haven’t seen the business world the same way since joining.”Business Development at Palantir Technologies and LAVAN Fellow

“LAVAN has already changed my thinking about how I want my Jewish values expressed in the world. I came to LAVAN as a Jewish educator and philanthropist, and yet, immediately, the LAVAN approach felt different. In addition to the superb finance education, LAVAN has changed the way I think about my Jewish responsibility in the world and the pivotal role of impact investing.”
